What is art? Art is the deliberate
creation of sensation, created by a
person, on purpose, to invoke a
response. An
art quilt possesses the
basic structural characteristics of
a quilt. It is mostly fabric with at
least two layers - a top or facing
layer and a backing layer. The face
layer can be made using one or
several techniques: pieced,
appliqué, whole cloth, stitched or
fused to the foundation. The face
and backing are held together with
hand, machine stitching or other
methods that are evenly distributed
throughout the quilt surface.
Paints, beads, yarns and lace are
only a few of the elements that can
be added to achieve texture. |

Octopus' Garden |
|
34 x 40 |
|
While traveling a
few years ago, an
interesting carpet
design caught my eye
as an idea for an
"art quilt". After
piecing the quilt, I
happened to look at
it from the side and
thought it looked
like waves. From
there it grew almost
on its own. With so
many levels and
embellishments, the
viewer finds
something new to
look at each time. |

Phoenix |
|
42 x 43 |
|
This quilt was
inspired by a
drawing from the
web. After some
design changes, a
miniature Lone Star
was pieced and
centered over the
hand appliquéd
flowers, leaves and
ribbons. A Celtic
inspired border
incorporates
sections of Lone
Star and is custom
quilted. |

My Space, No Dot Com |
|
I originally designed
this quilt in 2006 for a
customer & named it
simply "The Circle
Quilt." In 2009 I remade
the quilt for a Guild
Challenge, incorporating
more piecing & appliqué
techniques. It measures
62x73. It is densely
quilted on the
background to allow the
planets & orbits to
"float" on the quilt. |

This quilt was made
using a modified
Pickle Dish pattern.
I used tropical
colored batiks
trying to caputre
the sun's rays, the
palm trees and
oranges. It won
first place in the
2009 Southwest
Florida Quilt
Festival. It also
won Judges
Recognition at the
2008 Jacksonville,
FL Quilt Festival. |

AM & The Last Bee
Buzzin |
|
This quilt took on a
life of its own. It
started out as an
appliqué block but I
changed it to be a
whole cloth. The
elements are hand
appliquéd on black
fabric. It was
quilted with white
and black variegated
thread to achieve a
lacy look. The edge
was faced and edged
with interwoven bias
strips to stand out
on edge from the
quilt. It won 2nd
place in the 2009
Southwest Florida
Quilt Festival. |

Fairy Tales & Dragon
Tails |
|
This quilt was a
gift to our son and
daughter in law. She
wanted fairies and
dragons and loved
the navy blue batik.
Stencils were used
for the designs and
inked onto the light
blue fabric. It is
king size & was
quilted using a
wrought iron design. |

Shy Lady |
 |
|
This quilt was made for the 2008
Hoffman Challenge. The peacock
became the feathers for the
vintage look hat. Her eyelid was
made from another part of
fabric. The flowers were fused
and made to stand away from the
quilt. Real peacock feathers
were added to embellish the
birds body. It was recently sold
& she now lives in New Jersey. |

My Hearts Desire |
|
42 x 58 |
|
This is a Challenge
Quilt. The challenge
was to use a quarter
yard of the focus
fabric in a quilt.
The fabric for this
challenge is the
large flowers at the
bottom of the quilt.
Pam also used it for
the girls leis,
headdresses and also
for the "pods" in
the tree. |
