Traditional Quilts

Traditional quilts are based on historically documented patterns, designs or blocks and fabrics using representative “time honored” traditional styles and materials. Quilting refers to the sewing together of two layers of fabric with an inner layer of some warm, insulating material, such as cotton, wool, silk or polyester. It is both practical and decorative. Patchwork or piecework is the process of seaming small pieces of fabric into a larger whole. Appliqué is the process of sewing smaller pieces of fabric onto a larger background fabric.

Contemporary Quilts

Contemporary and art quilts are interchangeable terms to distinguish them from “traditional quilts.” Generally it refers to a quilt that is intended to be art and hung on a wall versus placed on a bed. Although some art quilts might also be used on a bed or as a throw.
Children's Quilts
Children’s quilts typically are constructed with little or no embellishment. They are constructed to withstand wear, tear and many washes with no loose or small pieces to come off with use. They are generally smaller than full size quilts ranging from approximately 36x42 to twin bed size, approximately 66x86. Most are made with bright colors, characters and larger designs. Different fabrics may be used to achieve different and varying textures for small fingers.
Americana/Patriotic Quilts
Americana/Patriotic quilts showcase elements of the American flag or the down-home country look that harkens back to the pioneer days. Quilting designs celebrate American heritage and culture. Armed forces fabric can be introduced to honor the servicemen of our country.

Art Quilts

What is art? Art is the deliberate creation of sensation, created by a person, on purpose, to invoke a response. An art quilt possesses the basic structural characteristics of a quilt. It is mostly fabric with at least two layers - a top or facing layer and a backing layer. The face layer can be made using one or several techniques: pieced, appliqué, whole cloth, stitched or fused to the foundation. The face and backing are held together with hand, machine stitching or other methods that are evenly distributed throughout the quilt surface. Paints, beads, yarns and lace are only a few of the elements that can be added to achieve texture.
